A timing belt is a toothed belt; it is made of a strong rubber material. It is the part of the internal combustion engine that is uses to synchronize the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft so the valves and piston of the engine move in synchronization.
Timing Belt or Timing Chain
The timing belt is a toothed belt and a timing chain is a roller chain similar to a bicycle chain it is both used to rotate the camshaft and crankshaft in synchronization. The timing belt has been the more commonly used part, but some manufacturers are using timing chains more often these days.
When to Change Timing Belt?
The life of a timing belt depends on the specification of the engine, every engineโs timing belt has a different lifespan.
The modern engine manufacturer recommends changing the timing belt after 90,000 kilometers of the drive. If you only use your car now and again and donโt do many kilometers, you will still need to change the belt based on the age of the vehicle. Timing belts can deteriorate or stretch over time. So, using a tensioner can give you more months of life.
Symptoms of Fault in Timing Belt
If the Timing Belt is worn or Broken, the following are Symptoms that may occur:
Smoke from the Engine
When the timing belt breaks; it canโt rotate the camshaft and crankshaft properly and the valves donโt open and close at right time, the smoke comes from the engine.
Fuel Efficiency
Fuel efficiency decrease when the Timing belt is worn or broken. Sometimes rotate unnecessarily and decreases the efficiency of fuel.
Rough Idling of the Engine
The timing belt is rubber material with teeth on it, and because of teeth, it grips the many parts of the engine. If the teeth start falling off and become insufficient, the timing belt starts slipping from the gears. Once this happens, the teeth fall directly into the gears and stuck in the engine. Worst of all, the engine will stop working because the camshaft and the crankshaft is not working.
Misfire of Engine
The timing belt is worn out because of the fire rate of the engine. If the timing belt is slip away and falls onto the camshaft, then some of the valves will open and close unnecessarily. If it happens, an engine misfire could occur which means the belt needs to be replaced right away. If you donโt replace the belt soon, the engine could be permanently damaged
Replacement Cost of Timing belt
The cost of the replacement of the timing belt depends on the engine. Some engine is hard to open and take so much time and labor; it is costly to replace the timing belt. Some engine is easy to open and they cost a little less. The average time to open an engine is 5 to 7 hours
