National disability insurance offers protection for those who are unable to work due to a short-term or long-term. When an injury or a disability becomes restrictive, disability insurance will pay a portion of their wage until they are able to return to work, find a job that they can do with the new restrictions on their health and ability, or they can remain on long-term disability for the remainder of their working years.

This program covers sick leave, both short and long-term disability. It is offered either through the employer or where individuals are self-employed, or their employer does not provide them an individual plan that can be purchased.

Types of Disability Insurance

There are a few types of disability insurance, and each has a purpose and a target market. Individual disability insurance allows those who do not have employer-supplied insurance to purchase their policy.

Employer-supplied insurance is a plan which is paid for by the employer and offers coverage to all employees. One division of this is workers compensation which is a more detailed and extended version that offers additional coverages to those who are hurt at work, including lost future income and medical bills as well.

Finally, a protective netting that is provided by most developed countries is the national security programs operating as social insurance. The government offers this and covers those not insured separately, who do not carry enough disability insurance to meet their needs, and provides an ongoing income.

Purpose of Disability Insurance

When people become hurt, either at work or at home, or become sick and are unable to stay working their current job, they require a way to have income until they can find a new position that fits their limitations or can return to work full time.

National disability insurance is in place to provide a monthly payment that is a percentage of their income to pay bills and provide for themselves. Sick leave covers short periods of time when an employee is unable to work due to a temporary illness.

Short-term disability covers those who are unable to work for a short period of time due to illness or injury but are expected to make a full recovery and return to previous job requirements. Finally, long-term disability provides an ongoing income to those who are not expected to return to work.

How it Works
