Are Pellet Grills Better Than Gas?

Pellet Grills Better Than Gas

Grilling season is upon us. Many of us are digging our old grills out, while others are considering purchasing a new grill.  With so many choices on the market, it can be overwhelming in finding the right grill for your needs.

Does this often lead to the question: are pellet grills better than gas grills?  Here we will look into both of these grills to determine which one truly is better.

A pellet grill uses wood pellets to ignite it.  These pellets are placed in a container called a hopper.  An auger then takes the pellets and transfers them to a fire pot, which is ignited by a hot rod. Can’t decide between a Camp Chef grill versus a Traeger grill? This buyer’s guide will help you make up your mind.

With pellet grills, you can add immense flavor using different types of wood pellets.  You may consider using mesquite or cherry for ribs or pecan, mesquite or hickory for brats.  Like the flavor of apples? Consider pairing it up with chicken.  Alder pairs up nicely with pork, beef, chicken, lamb, fish, and turkey.  Oakwood pellets work best with beef, seafood, and baked goods.

Pellet grills can be used to grill, braise, smoke, BBQ, bake, and more.  They use indirect heat so you never have to worry about an open flame burning up your foods.  Large quantities of meat can be cooked at lower temperatures compared to a gas grill.

There are many well-known companies that make the best pellet grills. One company that specializes in this is Z Grills.

Many advantages are found when using pellet grills.  These include:

  • Pellet grills are fast to ignite.  No worrying about finding matches.  No getting burnt with a lighter.  Just a touch of a button will turn the grill on for you.
  •  Have we talked about the immense flavor a pellet grill can deliver?  So many options to pick from that you will never be bored!
  • You will not have to worry about flare-ups!  Burned food can finally be a thing of the past.
  • These grills are very versatile.  Grill a steak then turn around and bake a cobbler.  Smoke some ribs, then cook some seafood.  One grill for so many things makes cleaning up a breeze.
  • Pellet grills are a huge time saver.  They can cook foods fast preheat quickly.
  • Many have wireless connectivity.  Control the grill through your smartphone!
  • Temperature is better regulated.  Foods are cooked evenly every time.
  • The temperature range is wider.  Pellet grills range from just under 200 degrees to 700 degrees + Fahrenheit.

Just like everything, the pellet grill has some disadvantages:

  • Grill marks will not be as pronounced.
  • These grills do not work well in wet conditions
  • Pellet grills need a source of electricity.

Gas grills have been around forever.  These use propane or butane to power them.  Food can be cooked directly over the flame or moved on the grill to indirect heat.

Gas grills can easily cook steaks, chicken thighs, leg of lamb, pork loins, and burgers.  Baked potatoes, grilled onions and peppers, hash brown casserole, baked beans, and pizza can be grilled.  They also are great for grilling fruit such as pineapple and watermelon.

Gas grills do have advantages as well.  These include:

  • Gas grills are very convenient to use.
  • They heat up in 15  minutes or less.
  • They have the ability to get up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit (the more expensive models).
  • Gas grills are relatively easy to clean up.
  • Some gas grills will come with extra accessories such as a burner.

Gas grills also have some disadvantages.  These include:

  • If you donโ€™t take good care of it, you will have to replace the burners or gas line.
  • If you purchase a cheap model, it will not be as durable.
  • Gas grills do not give the flavor that other grills do.
  • If your propane tank runs dry, you are out of luck unless you have a spare.

Now that you have read all the advantages and disadvantages of both pellet grills and gas grills, you will be able to see which one is suited better for you.  They both have the capability of cooking a wide range of foods from meats to veggies to fruits.  Both are easy to use, but the pellet grill will provide a robust flavor to any foods you cook.  And if you like having a large temperature range to cook from, the pellet grill will be better for you. While gas grills only grill or heat up foods, the pellet grill has the option to do so much more, such as bake or smoke.  And we can not forget that pellet grills do not need to be watched over constantly.  In fact, you can hook it up to an app and cook from your living room using your smartphone!
