Charlie was born on July 6, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan. He had Oneida (Onʌyoteˀa·ká·), Cree (Néhinaw), and Mohawk (Kanien’kehá:ka) heritage. Charlie Hill moved to the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin when he was 11; he received his education from the West De Pere High School. After graduating in 1968, he went to the University of Wisconsin–Madison and majored in speech and drama.

Charlie Hill’s family enjoyed comedy movies every weekend, which instilled a love for comedy in him. He enjoyed Dick Gregory’s comedy which involved Native American social equality topics.

In the early 1970s, Charlie was a part of Hanay Geiogomah’s Native American Theatre Ensemble. Thus, he often performed at the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in the East Village of Manhattan. Later, Charlie moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career as a comedian and superstar.
