Malik Deshawn Cox was born on June 23, 1978, in N.Y.C., U.S. Bleek grew up in Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, the same neighborhood as Jay-Z. He received his high school education from the Grand Street Campus High School in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City. He explained that his stage name, “Memphis,” is to show his respect for pimps which is an acronym for “Making Easy Money, Pimping Hoes In Style,” whereas he has been called “Bleek” by his younger sister since childhood.

Memphis Bleek is one of the first producers to sign a deal with Roc-A-Fella Records as a protégé to Jay-Z. After signing the contract, he started appearing on Jay-Z albums, including ‘Reasonable Doubt,’ ‘Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life,’ ‘Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter,’ ‘The Dynasty: Roc La Familia,’ and ‘The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse.’

Memphis Bleek officially appeared in his first debut album called ‘Coming of Age’ released by Roc-A-Fella, Get Low Records, and Def Jam on August 3, 1999. It was ranked as the week’s Hot Shot Debut album, and around 118,000 copies were sold in the first week of its release. The album peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200 chart. After his debut album, Bleek released three more albums: ‘ The Understanding,’ ‘M.A.D.E.,’ and ‘534.’

Bleek launched his second studio album, ‘The Understanding’ on December 5, 2000, by Get Low Records, Roc-A-Fella Records, and Def Jam Records. In October 2002, R.I.A.A. certified the album Gold for selling around 500,000 copies.

On December 16, 2003, he released his third studio album titled ‘M.A.D.E.’ by Get Low Records, Roc-A-Fella Records, and Def Jam Records. His album got ranked at #35 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Memphis Bleek went on a break for three years in the middle of the release of his album ‘The Understanding’, and ‘M.A.D.E.’. He took this break to take care of his severely injured older brother.

Bleek released his fourth studio album ‘534’ featuring Rihanna and Jay-Z, on May 17, 2005, by Get Low Records, Roc-A-Fella Records, and Def Jam Recordings. ‘534’ is named in memory of the building number of the tenement house in which Memphis Bleek and Jay-Z grew up.

In the fall of 2005, Bleek started working on a classic album called “The Process,” which wasn’t launched. He left Roc-A-Fella Records and signed a deal with Mass Appeal Entertainment in 2009.

Memphis Bleek re-released “The Movement” along with The Liberty Music Group on April 10, 2012. He worked again with The Liberty Music Group and released “Kush Vol.2” on June 6, 2012. Bleek released a mixtape called “The Movement 2” on March 21, 2014.
